JUNEAU–The dead whale found lodged on the bow of a Juneau-bound cruise ship is not a juvenile, according to a press release from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
“The whale was larger than we originally thought,” said NOAA Mammal Stranding Coordinator Aleria Jensen. “It measured 43 feet long, indicating a fully grown female.”
The whale was discovered on the bow of Princess Cruises’ “Sapphire Princess” Wednesday, July 28. The whale “became attached overnight,” the release said.
A necropsy will be conducted on the whale July 30 to determine the cause of death.
