Ex-Alaska lawmaker sentenced on corruption charge
By MARK THIESSEN / The Associated Press
ANCHORAGE — A former Alaska lawmaker will serve six months in a federal prison following her conviction on corruption charges.
Beverly Masek was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court in Anchorage.
Masek pleaded guilty in March to conspiring to accept $4,000 from former VECO chief executive Bill Allen, a major Alaska political operative and the man tied to convictions of a handful of other lawmakers.
Prosecutors say Masek acted at Allen’s request to kill a bill that would have raised crude oil taxes. VECO was a company that did maintenance, design and construction work for oil companies.
Masek, a Republican, represented the Matanuska-Susitna area in the state House from 1995-2004.

Now that’s something you don’t see every day…a corrupt republican in bed with big oil (and their friends).

Wow, I had no idea it wasn’t her fault.
It was her alcoholism.. no wait it was her ex-husband’s fault.. wait it was her lack of experience oh wait it was Ramona Barne’s fault.. wait it was her inability to figure out the job.. oh wait it was her depression, oh wait it was because she had no money… oh wait it was because she was controlled by others in the legislature… oh wait it was because she was unsophisticated.. wait it was because of Allen’s pressure… oh wait it was because she was overwhelmed….
I think it was actually because she’s a criminal. (not a disparaging comment at this point, it is an actual proven fact.)
