ANCHORAGE – Canada’s Sebastian Schnuelle is in the lead Tuesday morning, more than 190 miles into the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
Paul Gebhardt of Kasilof was the first out of the Rohn checkpoint, departing at 8:32 p.m. Monday for the 75-mile run to the checkpoint at Nikolai.
Schnuelle, of Whitehorse, left Rohn more than three hours later. According to the Iditarod’s satellite tracking system, Schnuelle ultimately took the lead and is nearing Nikolai.
He’s followed by 2004 winner Mitch Seavey of Sterling and John Baker of Kotzebue.
On Sunday, 71 mushers left Willow for the 1,100-mile race to Nome.

6 dogs died in last year’s race. An average of 2 dogs die each year in this warped display of testosterone and greed, literally driven to death.
To race dogs for a few miles for the tourists is one thing. Racing them more than 1100 miles in horirble weather is beyond cruel.
This tradition needs to die. This is a blemish on Alaska like bull fighting is to Mexico. We are better than this.
Michael Vick did similar things; exploiting dogs for the amusement of people.
