2 avalanches close Seward Highway

ANCHORAGE – Two avalanches Tuesday morning have forced the closure of the Seward Highway south of Anchorage, cutting off traffic to the Kenai Peninsula.
The latest occurred just before 9 a.m., about three miles south of Girdwood. Transportation department spokesman Roger Wetherell says there are no immediate reports of injuries or the size of the slide.
The first avalanche occurred at about 7 a.m. at mile post 98.5 on the Seward Highway. The debris field is 75 feet long and 6 feet deep.
The highway is closed between Mile 38 and Mile 100. Crews are working to remove the snow, and Wetherell says they are looking at the possibility of the highway reopening late Tuesday.
Another avalanche Monday forced the closure of the Richardson Highway between mileposts 12 and 65 near Valdez. Wetherell on Tuesday said the road remains closed until further notice.
