More snow predicted as schools close; city, state offices remain open
Juneau Empire
A winter storm warning in Juneau will remain in effect until 6 tonight, as the National Weather Service predicts an additional 6 to 10 inches of snow accumulation.
All Juneau public schools are closed today due to weather and road conditions. City and state offices will remain open, however.
The Juneau Parks and Recreation Department announced that the Mount Jumbo Gym and the Parks and Recreation administration offices will be closed today. Parks and Recreation youth basketball practices on Saturday have also been canceled.
The Treadwell Arena, Augustus Brown Pool, Zach Gordon Youth Center and Juneau-Douglas City Museum are open.
An additional 2 inches of snow is expected tonight with low temperatures around 22 degrees and an 80 percent chance of precipitation.

I am jealous, and I have to say that this town is now full wussies. born here in 1960, we got lots more snow than we have in the last 10 years and never, never got snow days, they did not call off work and the buses gave people rides up the hill. I had to watch a partially blind find his way up cedar park because the buses won’t go up any more. I am just curious when did we in Juneau become worthless lazy people??

Donna – I lived in Cedar Park in 1975-76 and the buses did NOT go up the hill if the roads were bad. Trust me – I walked it MANY times!

Oh Donna!!! If you don’t like all us lazy people… maybe you should decide to find a town that meets your expectations… Good luck hunting…

Donna- Did it occur to you that you were most likely a lot shorter back then so it only seemed like the snow was a lot deeper. I was born 1961 and raised here in Juneau and I have a picture of me, at six years old, riding my brand new red bike on Christmas morning with no snow on the ground.

No, Eaglecrest is open….just the Ptarmigan lift closed. Must be nice to go enjoy it…

My favorite part of today was the part where they were like “CBJ and the SOB are open, but we encourage people not to come to work today and take leave.”
I laughed so hard. Then got in my car and went to work at the SOB. Thanks everyone for leaving me alone here… I didn’t get to do ANY of my work that I came in today to catch up on, because no one is here to answer the phones. You guys suck.
January 9th, 2009 at 4:45 pm
Did everyone forward their phones to you, Agreed, or did they stick you one one of the few multi-line phones left in State offices?
I’m so proud of you for throwing caution to the wind and then tearing into others for actually being concerned about their safety and the safety of their children. Maybe your co-wokers should have left their kids at home alone so you could get your precious “work” done, since that obviously should be so much more important. Or perhaps you failed to procreate? If so, bonus points for you!
Perhaps you should direct your ire at Kreitzer…oh, wait. She obviously cares as much about your co-workers’ safety as you do. Just remember this. If she had declared a snow day, you wouldn’t have been “obligated” to answer everyone else’s phones. Unless that was really just a person choice so that you’d have something to complain about on Monday and oh, I’m so much more dedicated than everyone else and oh, put me up on my pedestal and you! Polish my halo because I’m so much more holier than thou.
Get a job with the private sector. Not only will you get paid more, your brown-nosing might someday earn you Corporate Vice-Presidency!

The roads were fine all day. Absolutely a non-issue. There was no reason anything should have been closed down today.
Kudo’s to the snow removal crew’s – you folks are doing a great job of it!

Count your blessings. Stop complaining. Think about all the wonderful things that we have: a car, a job, a place to live, nice clothes to wear, good food to eat, and a God who loves us, and much much more.
