Seattle cancer center picks new leader

SEATTLE – The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center has picked a new leader: an internationally known expert in virology, immunology and vaccine research.
Dr. Lawrence Corey will be the fourth president and director in the center’s 35-year history.
He is known for his research in infectious disease-related cancers, HIV infection and medical complications in patients with compromised immune systems.
He seeks novel therapies and vaccines for viral infections, in particular herpes viruses, HIV and infections related to cancer.
He wants to expand the center’s research into understanding the role cancer plays in global health.
Corey is a principal investigator of the HIV Vaccine Trails Network, which is an international collaboration based at the center. And he played a leadership role in establishing a medical training partnership with the Uganda Cancer Institute.
