Will Gov. Sarah Palin’s resignation impact any political ambitions she has for a higher political office?

Readers, the entire newsroom is in the office and working on various stories regarding Gov. Palin’s announcement that she will resign. We will publish stories online as they are turned in. Check back for regular updates throughout the weekend.

Nobody loves a quitter. I doubt that this was a good political move for Sara.
July 3rd, 2009 at 1:10 pm
Yup, stick a fork in her.
July 3rd, 2009 at 1:16 pm
Maybe.
July 3rd, 2009 at 1:18 pm
Who votes for a “QUITTER”????
July 3rd, 2009 at 1:40 pm
She just dug her own political grave. May she forever rest in peace.
July 3rd, 2009 at 1:52 pm
She’s a Quitter and Im happy she is, dont need her at all in any of the political arena’s.
July 3rd, 2009 at 1:53 pm
According to the article just run by JE she still has a favorable rating with conservative Rs, and they seem to think that anything she says is gospel be it truth, lies, or gibberish. So, maybe she could still be elected to represent the Republican party, if she can survive the long brutal campaign. That’s a big if. Or maybe she’s more of the mind of being a political mouthpiece for her views, kind of like Rush but only speaking to large pre-selected audiences that would not challenge her message. Having to think quickly has led to her most embarrassing moments. Just get on stage and preach the gospel of right-wing conservatism. This would allow for criticism to only come from the media where she can then label them the dirty-low-down Liberal Media. Very safe approach that she would actually be good at.
July 3rd, 2009 at 2:08 pm
Zero credibility, lack of follow through and a quitter to boot. Not exactly the resume we the people look for in any employee, let alone one occupying high political office. You could hear Sarah’s political coffin slam shut all the way from Wasilla.
July 3rd, 2009 at 2:13 pm
I encourage you all to submit a letter to the editor for publication in our Sunday issue. Letters can be sent to editor@juneauempire.com.

Agreed. I’m not so certain that people will vote for a person who packs up their toys and goes home when things don’t go they way they want them to.
July 3rd, 2009 at 2:56 pm
If she had any ambitions for higher office, she doesn’t now. This decision ended any hope of her getting elected to any national-level position.
Seemingly, she decided to leave her office for a strange reason. She wasn’t running for higher office. She hasn’t stated a medical reason for her decision. It appears she left because politics is an ugly profession.
Who could guarantee that she wouldn’t leave another office, if elected, for the same reason?
I sincerely believe she will not pursue a life in politics.
July 3rd, 2009 at 3:29 pm
a zombie pipeline, larger government, billion dollar deficits, lame legislative relations, troopergate, todd the lt. gov, perdiem while living at home, and who knows what is next with this resignation. goooooodbye!!!
July 3rd, 2009 at 3:49 pm
Palin’s not so sudden departure is the best global news yet. Alaska’s political system is in the toilet. The only impact that Palin’s departure will have is looking from the bottom of the toilet up. Can Alaskans every be so hopeful to hear the news that the Palins have moved to another statet or country? Ohmygod.
July 3rd, 2009 at 3:51 pm
Now maybe we will get a Gov that likes Juneau and bring the state government back to Juneau where it belongs
July 3rd, 2009 at 3:57 pm
I was born in Juneau and still have family there. It is my belief that Sarah is on to bigger and better things. She is a smart lady. Rarely do politicians come along that truly “work” for the people and Sarah is one of them. I also think that she stepped aside to let the Lt. Gov. build a platform for the 2010 elections. You all better pray that a Democrat doesn’t win the Governor’s race. Our resource rich state of Colorado has been driven into the ground under Ritter the Dem. Thank goodness we got rid of Ken Salazar when he joined BO’s team. Good luck ever getting ANWR opened with him in the Interior Dept.
And, oh by the way, all the nastiness and name calling isn’t very becoming. Can’t you discuss the issues like adults?
July 3rd, 2009 at 3:57 pm
Romney-Palin; unstoppable in 2012!
July 3rd, 2009 at 4:00 pm
It’s an admission of political suicide-by-indifference. By chumping out on the governor’s job in Alaska, she forfeits way too much credibility and is apparently content to milk the lecture circuit nationally for what she can get out of it while her celebrity is marketable.
Such a change from a year ago, when she was regarded by many (with minds still open, at least) as a new but reasonably competent governor who was working to better her state’s condition.
July 3rd, 2009 at 4:29 pm
She’s done. If she thinks this is the route to DC politics she is insane.
July 3rd, 2009 at 4:31 pm
It will make for an interesting July 4th parade in downtown Juneau tomarrow. I think that quitting with no real given reasons is political suicide.I have lived here in Juneau 35 years and have never thought we could have back to back complete disaters as Governers
July 3rd, 2009 at 4:32 pm
She’s proven herself unreliable and unable to handle run-of-the-mill criticism that all politicians are subject to.
Her ‘excuses’ as to why she was quitting were all nonsense. Maybe she believes everything that comes out of her mouth, but most everyone else has been trained to expect nothing but self-service, even if it means telling a lie or two.
I remember when she was first nommed as vp. Her and Todd didn’t get their stories straight and Sarah said she of course discussed the job offer with her kids and they were supportive. Todd on the other hand had said they kept the entire thing a secret. A dumb thing to lie about, but was only the beginning of the fairy tale.
Thank gawd our state doesn’t have to feel like crawling under a rock because of her inability to take the heat like a mature person on a national level.
Thank you, Sarah!
July 3rd, 2009 at 5:10 pm
You can’t see Russia from your house in D.C. David Letterman for Prez. 2012.
July 3rd, 2009 at 5:25 pm
Mr. Westmoreland:
Is someone in the newsroom working on a story about the supposed federal indictment coming down on Palin regarding the building of her home?
July 3rd, 2009 at 7:27 pm
To ask adwise from her teenage kids on such an important issue of to resign from such a high position or not, seems really out there, come on, you might ask a teen about what they would like for dinner or where they would like to go
on a family vacation ….
July 3rd, 2009 at 7:27 pm
As a Democrat I initially I gave Governor Palin the benefit of the doubt and hoped she’d turn out to be another Jay Hammond……..an honest, thoughtfull governor for all of Alaska. Well, she has effectively proven to me that that will not be the case. What we got instead was a pathetic, pathological liar and malignant narcissist. Will her star continue to burn? I hope not because it will be to the detriment of our nation. Time to move on and celebrate our country’s freedom to assemble……..happy 4th of July Juneau!!
July 3rd, 2009 at 8:18 pm
WHO CARES! SHE’S LEAVING!!!!
DING, DONG, THE WITCH IS DEAD!
July 3rd, 2009 at 10:10 pm
Maria, when she asked her kids, she said she got four “yeses” and one “hell yes.” So I guess not just the teens voted, but also Trig?
July 4th, 2009 at 5:53 am
I believe she just wanted to get out of the public eye asap because of the critical and condescending comments about her and her family. I also believe any future political aspirations for Sarah Palin are compromised. I do wish her and her family peace. I also like the BB comment – work on bringing back the government to Juneau. Happy Independence day to everybody in Juneau. I sure miss it there, especially on the 4th of July.
July 4th, 2009 at 5:59 am
Pundits say that Palin has had a remarkable career. How remarkable is a politician who is more anxious about public opinion than Alaskan issues? She compares her quitting and moving on–to where is unclear–to her glory day moves as a high school basket ball player. (Could we have had an adult comparison?) Beyond the deep conservatives whose own governor(s) are having affairs, who is on her team?
July 4th, 2009 at 7:09 am
ALL these people (bloggers) can’t wrong, sounds like a good move on her part. For the people who thinks she’s doing a bang-up job for Alaska, all I have to say is, WOW…
July 4th, 2009 at 7:18 am
She began a national political action committee. Her podium has a banner that reads, “Country First.” Does anyone really think she has any intention of fading into the background? Quitting at this point in her gubernatorial career was a BRILLIANT execution of strategy for two reasons.
First off, her term is essentially done anyway; she’ll get little else done in a lame duck session of the legislature. She’s also facing a big loss on stimulus funds if she stays on. She is also right when she says she can affect Alaska issues more from the outside; she has higher credibility with people down south compared to people here in AK who’ve had to put up with her.
July 4th, 2009 at 7:35 am
This decision could have a negative impact on any future political aspirations for her. However, I she is still popular enough to be voted back into a public office. plus, like her predecessors before her she has left the governors office accomplishing a few objectives our state had before her term, which would run in her favor and the republicans on top of that I feel during the last two months the republican party has done a better job at defending each other when one current public official was criticized, which would also run in her favor. It depends on her how successful she will be in the later future; however she still has those traits which makes her appear genuinely likable and incompetent to the general public.
July 4th, 2009 at 7:55 am
I don’t know what it is but sooner or later the real reason for Palin’s resignation will hit the news. Sarah Palin is doomed to become a laughable footnote, and an object lesson is how NOT to do politics. I sincerely hope the Neocons persist in running her for something. That will put the final nail in their coffin and the Republican Party can finally return to normallacy at long last.
We always need two viable political parties to balance things out.
July 4th, 2009 at 8:29 am
When danger reared its ugly head
She bravely turned her tail and fled
Yes, brave Ms. Sarah turned about
And gallantly she chickened out
Bravely talking to her feet
She beat a very brave retreat
Bravest of the brave, Ms. Sarah.
July 4th, 2009 at 8:34 am
I love her. I wish her well. She served all of us WELL.
We should never forget that fact. She left a strongly and competently managed state that Parnell just needs to keep on managing as Palin has done. That’s all. We will be fine. She will move on – and hopefully (or so we should all hope) she will be given the chance to help us all – in a broader sense – nationally. As we certainly are not being “served” competently and accountably in Washington, D.C. right now.
Best of Luck, and thanks Governor. Thanks very much.
July 4th, 2009 at 9:26 am
Lets keep things in perspective, even on her worst day, is still better and infinitely more honest than than Frank Murkowski. Mortaxski was a blight on the state, Sarah by comparison was a minor pain in the tush, used as a pinata by the liberal media including the Vampire itself.
Her national career aspirations will take a hit, but teamed up with a proper Republican may do well.
July 4th, 2009 at 9:29 am
Oh Lorraine…you’re having a nightmare!! Wake up!!
Sarah said all the right things when she was campaigning for office. That’s what a politician does! Whether they follow through depends on how much contact is made with the real world. Cudo’s to the governor for throwing the towel in. She knows she’s lost the confidence of Alaskans, her staff, the Legislature! She just couldn’t do the job! She was not used to taking criticism because she was a star in high school. They raved about Sarah!!! Well, this is the real world. That ball has quit bouncing for her, and she’s gal enough to realize that! For her sake and her family, I hope that the ball stops bouncing here and she returns to normal living, her hubby goes back to the Slope, and she just spoils her grandchild rotten!
July 4th, 2009 at 10:19 am
Lorraine – respectfully, I say – do NOT speak for me! {She served all of us WELL.} She did NOT serve me well and I couldn’t be any happier that she’s going away now. Sean Parnell couldn’t possibly do a worse job – pack your suitcases Gov. Parnell – the Governor’s mansion is waiting for you!!
Buh-Bye Sarah! Don’t let the door hit you in the a$$ on the way out!
Oh, and please stay out of politics – you’re just no good at it….
July 4th, 2009 at 1:06 pm
Toast. Burnt, I think…
July 4th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
“however she still has those traits which makes her appear genuinely likable and incompetent to the general public.”
That gets my vote for the most telling Freudian slip of the day.
July 4th, 2009 at 2:13 pm
No I don’t think anyone running for office will take a chance with her, look what happened to John McCain’s campaign.
Sarah Palin would not listen to anyone and she thought she was being a “Maverick” but she was being foolish.
And Sarah Palin stop trying to sell our state out to the highest bidder. Most Alaskans want to protect this state from the companies that want to come here and suck the life out of it just so people can live over the top life styles.
Yes this is a new age and we need leaders that will take us in a different direction where we protect our natural resources and use them as God intended. God never intended for man to destroy this planet by using his natural resources the way we do.
So, yes I am glad that you quit because we need people in office that understand this new direction our country must move in order to have any hope for a sustainable future.
July 4th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
looks like all you socialist democrats need to run for office, being as how it appears you sound off ass es can do better!!!
get into politics and see how fast you get fried@!!
i havent seen 1 not 1 decent proven honest critsisem to match all the hatred coming out of this group!!!
That and oh well must be the great ones fans what a joke!!!
July 4th, 2009 at 3:20 pm
That was a fiasco of an exit. Rambling speech and no clear transition announced in terms of what’s next. Not even the old chestnut of “spending more time with the family.” Instead vague rhetoric and basically admitting defeat. If she doesn’t go sight-seeing, being a gov is more work and harder than she wants to deal with right now. Doesn’t even apologize to the people who elected her or for breaking her promise to serve four years.
I don’t see how she expects to be on the varsity team when she wants off the court during a JV game.
July 4th, 2009 at 6:48 pm
Come on:
We are looking into that, but not much will develop over the weekend since no state or federal workers are in until Monday. Right now the situation you’re referring to is speculative. Many do expect the other shoe to drop soon.
July 4th, 2009 at 7:56 pm
Unstable at best. Anyone who quits, for no stated reason (contrary to what she says) is kooky. Even a strong, and long supporter like me says, she’s done. Done for good. I hate to say it, but I have to agree with TV commenators, she’s a kook. We’ll never see the name “Palin” on a ballot again, as long as we live.
July 4th, 2009 at 10:21 pm
Palin aborted her governorship when it became (personally or politically) inconvenient to her.
July 4th, 2009 at 10:57 pm
Well, Mr. Westmoreland, maybe it’s not that, but it’s something. There IS something coming down. We’ll figure it out soon enough, I believe.
This link was recently posted on her Twitter.

kar- GREAT analogy with Varsity/JV. What if she would have gone to the level of VP. would she have walked when the going got tough? Only in my nightmares would she be anywhere near the white house. She may have realized what she has done to herself and family, and is quitting while she is still on thin ice, rather than haven falling through. Unfortunately, I suspect she has done this for personal/financial and other gains. I guess we will see soon….
July 5th, 2009 at 12:48 am
Come on! Says:
July 3rd, 2009 at 5:25 pm
Mr. Westmoreland:
Is someone in the newsroom working on a story about the supposed federal indictment coming down on Palin regarding the building of her home?
Be Careful! Her Attorney Mr. Van “ignoree the subpoenas and get found in contempt” Flien has threatened a lawsuit against speculators on the house construction matters.
Funny how in one breath it’s all about state sovreignty and in another it’s all about political interference (meddling, obstructing) of the state’s legislative process.
July 5th, 2009 at 5:31 am
Why did Sarah, Todd and Bristol came to Juneau? She didn’t participate in the parade and didn’t have the courtesy to tell the parade organizers that she wasn’t going to do so.
It doesn’t seem that Sarah has had any affinity for Juneau in the past; quite the opposite is true. It seems she pretty much moved the state governmental operations to Anchorage. So why go to Juneau?
Was Bristol already in Juneau at the time of the speech? She wasn’t with her mother when she resigned.
If they felt it was important to celebrate the 4th in Juneau, did Willow and Piper come as well? After all of hooplah, it seems that the family would have wanted to spend some time together.
If they stay, why would Sarah, Todd and Bristol need to be in Juneau on Monday? Since Juneau is the state capitol, maybe certain documents need to be filed there. Anyone know about Alaska’s laws and rules concerning issues relating to the Palins that might need to be filed in Juneau or might be filed in Juneau to fake out those who are watching in Anchorage.
Folks in Juneau, please watch what the Palins are doing. If you like you can discuss at Palins Deceptions http://www.palindeception.com/blog/
July 5th, 2009 at 5:35 am
Lots of talking out of both sides of the mouth from the pundits analyzing this strange woman. If everyone makes fun of her, can’t stand her, think she’s a menace to society, etc.etc., why buy her book, why pay to hear her speak, why encourage her to share her convoluted thought process??? Maybe if more people simply ignored her, she would go away. The minute she saw that red light on the television cameras go on, she has acted like she finally found her place on this earth. And it has nothing to do with God’s will or faith-based reflection. She insults Alaska by saying she’s doing this FOR her beloved state, she insults God by suggesting he/she is responsible for her behavior. Oh wait, she thinks SHE is God, so that makes it okay…I guess there are just some people who are attracted to train wrecks and simple minds.
It’s a good thing she’s pretty…
July 5th, 2009 at 6:39 am
I have been watching and listing to Sarah Palin for months now,and I am glad that she is no longer the gov for you people in alaska , SHE IS A jOKE PEOPLE<<<<<<<<<<<<
July 5th, 2009 at 8:01 am
Give it a rest! all you hatters
July 5th, 2009 at 8:10 am
Based on the timing of her resignation and the incoherence of her resignation speech, I think Sarah Palin’s higher calling is to be the next “King of Pop”.
July 5th, 2009 at 9:22 am
@”hatters not welcome:”
You wrote, “Give it a rest! all you hatters”
I agree completely! All hatters and coaters and shoers need a very well deserved rest.
So, my advice to all hatters is simple, “Take off their hats, coats, and shoes. Take a load off. Just sit down and ruminate–about all of those roomers that have taken residence in Alaska. Have they been registered as Republicans, Democrats, Alaska Independents, or what? Did Acorn have anything to do with it? The Wasilla Council of Churches? The Personnel Board? The Troopers, on or off duty? My goodness, the possibilities… And what about all of Sarah’s RNC hats and coats and dresses and shoes? They must have been involved. Yup. You betcha.”
I feel so much better now that I’ve taken off my hat. You will, too!
(Or, dear “hatters not welcome,” do you just need to clean the “t” on your keyboard? If you meant “haters,” you just don’t understand–it’s not hate, it’s extreme disappointment with the presence (read “persona”) and performance of Governor Palin. By the way, would you say that she was doing during the campaign as she incited crowds of supporters to the point that “Kill him” was chanted? At more than one venue, too. Now, that’s hate, ain’t it?)
July 5th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
If she truly intends to run for president in 2012, which is a ludicrous idea, I don’t see how resigning as governor can help.
Who knows? Perhaps “Idiocracy” is our future.
July 5th, 2009 at 12:50 pm
With all this bright sunshine I had to put my hat back on to keep the sun out of my eyes. But every one is welcome to take it all off and then go jump in the lake….but wear your sunscreen! Good Bye Sarah-please don’t wast your time (and our time) running for the White House.
July 5th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
Wow, where are all these ‘hatters’ comming from?
It must be the threshold level for ppm Mercury in Juneau water is getting higher causing more people to be mad as hatters.
July 5th, 2009 at 3:28 pm
the next Governor I vote for will say they will live in Juneau
July 5th, 2009 at 3:33 pm
I hope she runs for POTUS or VP in 2012….just so we can watch her crash and burn…again!
My most disgusted part of her resignation speech was the lying, squishy, “how much I love Alaska” BS. If she truly loved Alaska, then that means ALL of Alaska, especially its capital…
…and we ALL know how much love she has for Juneau…about as much as Juneau has for her, and that ain’t much.
Please run for POTUS Sarah, I love hearing you string together long sentences of incoherent thought just like Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson. I love hearing you babble and over-explain things, then assume that contented look on your face as if you’ve just said something profound.
Sing with me…
NA NA NA NA,
NA NA NA NA,
HEY HEY-EY,
GOOOOD BYYYYYYE!
July 5th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
Carebear, that was hilarious.
She belongs in a Monty Python gig.
“I am NOT a witch. They dressed me like this and put this nose on me.”
July 5th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
Denver Conservative, Your juvenile, baseless comment, “Our resource rich state of Colorado has been driven into the ground under Ritter the Dem. Thank goodness we got rid of Ken Salazar when he joined BO’s team. Good luck ever getting ANWR opened with him in the Interior Dept,” does not in any way show that you can discuss issues like an adult. You seem not even to understand the issues.
July 5th, 2009 at 7:05 pm
Thank you Sarah. I don’t think you will succeed in politics whether it be local, regional, state or national. Your statement about how you could be a lameduck that travels the country and gets a paycheck says it all. Isn’t that what you’ve been doing for the last 8 months anyway? Where is the, “I want to complete my goals, make sure the agenda I promised Alaska is completed?”
I voted for you and I’m not a Republican. Had I known about your trying to ban books and fire the librarian in Wasilla, I would NOT have voted for you. Our news folks need to stop being so protective and actually work to get the news and vet our candidates. How many do we have now that have been crooked and found guilty and how many of them were Republicans versus Democrats? When will Alaska learn? Two Republican Governors in a row and look what’s happened!
July 5th, 2009 at 7:11 pm
Oh Sarah, you fickle pol. What promise you provided, to save us all from the scourge of more Frank! But now, you’ve given us the same kind of doublespeak, absurd logic for what you are doing with the position you were elected to. Go back to being a soccer mom – it’s your highest calling!
July 5th, 2009 at 9:02 pm
Palin has been unable and unwilling to deal with all the criticism and constructively respond to it. It’s one of those laws of human nature – you encourage criticism from others by being negative, reactive and defensive. I doubt she ever learned those tenets in grade school. Besides, if she had to repeat the 10th grade she might have a better understanding of world geography.
July 6th, 2009 at 1:20 am
This question is funny because it assumes Sarah Palin has any political aspirations to begin with. She seems to continually wander into positions far beyond her ambition or capacity by random flukes… much like the cute little deer in the headlights that wander in front of your car. Looks like Sarah Palin finally snapped out of her daze and ran off the road. Good little deer.
July 6th, 2009 at 1:40 am
She’s going to go for the gold. She’ll make more money rambling in front of a bunch of right-wingers than Frank Sinatra ever did by singing. Go for it Sarah! Just stay out of our lives.
July 6th, 2009 at 4:34 am
Sara, Sara, Sara. God Bless you and yours! I’m sure we have not heard the last of the Palins. ROCK ON!!!
July 6th, 2009 at 5:06 am
Well we can all rest now, knowing this nut job will never get close to the RED button. she really needs some mental health. any way thank God she will be gone from all our lives.
July 6th, 2009 at 6:29 am
Soooo glad she’s leaving!! She doesnt have a chance in the future, she will be viewed as a quiter an someone who can’t handle it!
If she cant keep it together as a gov she has NO chance at being president to bad she has another 3 weeks!
July 6th, 2009 at 7:07 am
Among social and religious conservatives – “values voters,” as they’re known – Palin will remain popular, though if she runs in 2012 she probably will have competition for those voters from former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee and perhaps others.
Why would you prefer Palin over Huckabee? he is a really intelligent person in contrast to Palin.
July 6th, 2009 at 7:18 am
NO ONE will miss her if she leaves now.. SO HUNY.. dont let the doorknob to the Governors Mansion hit in where the good lord split ya.. you remember where the Governors mansion is dont ya?? I know for one, I am SICK of paying YOUR house payments with my tax dollars AND an empty mansion. BUH BYE
July 6th, 2009 at 7:37 am
nome498: “if she had to repeat the 10th grade she might have a better understanding of world geography.” Pretty witty there, but wasn’t it BO who said he had visited 57 states and still had 2 more to go?
July 6th, 2009 at 10:34 am
Milspec – it’s amusing you and others would turn this discussion to Obama to apparently deflect or distract from the disastrous repercussions of Palin’s resignation. If you seriously believe Obama did not know there were 50 states when he supposedly said what you quote him as saying, then I believe you’re mistaken. On the other hand, there’s no mistake that even Fox News commentator Liz Trotta exclaimed this morning that Palin is “inarticulate and undereducated.” I would wager you a fine Juneau beer that if you asked Palin to complete a map of the 50 state names (not to mention the capitals) she would fail miserably. She might not even recollect the name of the Capital of Alaska! So I rest my case on Palin’s dismal understanding of world geography, notwithstanding her astute perspectives of Canadian and Russian borders and airspaces so infamously described during the Katie Couric interview.
July 6th, 2009 at 11:00 am
Thank god it’s over.
July 6th, 2009 at 11:49 am
I would hope that this puts paid to her political ambitions once and for all. However, I read yesterday that she was quoted as saying that if she ran against President Obama, she would beat him….wonder if she was refering to a foot race? If anyone is interested, there is an article coming out soon titled “It Came From Wasilla” that is in the August 2009 Vanity Fair. If this is not on the news stands, it can be read online…just use your browser to look it up.
July 6th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
Ich Rauche a few lines up has it right….it is about money….when you are a conservative darling in a time of no competition…you will make the big bucks riding that speech curcuit…book deals….kind of like baseball card shows…you can make big bucks signing autographs and such. I submit that as as ex gov at this time is absolutely the best financial decision that Sarah Palin has EVER made. She is free to work for the highest bidder and will retire comfortably in a few short years. In many ways, I salute her astute business sense….be the right brand at the right time.

Nome498….touche. I think you’re right on, but I’d probably turn to another test if you’re wanting to determine the brain power of a politician. Heck, Teddy Kennedy can’t even make it across a bridge in his part of the country without dunking a car. I doubt he, or most any other politician R or D, could get more than 35 or 40 states correct on a map.
July 6th, 2009 at 3:58 pm
I certainly don’t salute Sarah Palin for quitting her job as Governor, she quit on the people of Alaska that voted for her. I think this reflects poorly on her ethics.
July 6th, 2009 at 3:58 pm
She wasn’t going to be a lame duck that traveled around the state/country…yet she gives her notice to resign in Wasilla, then flies down to Juneau for the fireworks and the parade on a weekend, and now is commercial fishing on the western seas of Alaska. Did the State pay for all that travel? She refused to be in our parade and what business was conducted on the weekend? Will she get paychecks from two places at once, commercial fishing and as Governor? Per her description, she is being an active lame duck!
Will the State give her a guaranteed retirement with full insurance for life for her and her family, even though she didn’t complete even one term as Governor, by her own choice? Shouldn’t our legislators be looking into this?
July 6th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
WHO CARES !
July 6th, 2009 at 5:04 pm
She hasn’t quit… She’s going to war against the liberals. Mark “the Little Boy Senator” Begich, your days are numbered. Liberal obstructionists…. You’ve tied her hands as Gov. Now what? Good Luck with that. LOL
July 6th, 2009 at 6:16 pm
Dont take yourselves so seriously Juneau nobody else does.
July 6th, 2009 at 7:38 pm
I pray she stays out of politics and takes care of her family. One less revolting hypocrite in government. A great day for America.
July 7th, 2009 at 6:51 am
Remember the days when breaking the law was a crime? (Well folks if you run for office you’re above the law just ask Senator Stevens). Sara Pain in the state probably found a conscience and decided to bail out before the investigations were finished. If you or I did some of the things she did we’d be at the grey bar hotel, but as I said only the ones in power or wealthy are above the law. I say good riddins!
July 7th, 2009 at 7:44 am
I’m not a Sarah fan, but you’re all being VERY short sighted and really full of yourselves. First off, Gov. of ALASKA is really little league PTA dribble. It’s barely one step up from Mayor of nowhere. The Obstructions have tried endlessly to hand-cuff her legally in effort to bog the processes….. Well, Houdini just slipped out of the cuffs and I do believe she’s smells blood in the water. I don’t think she has ANY aspirations for Presidency, BUT!!!#1 – The national cameras love Sarah, she’ll become the bread winner for the Republican Party. She’ll make Obama look like he was Trick-or Treating for UNICEF. #2 Whether Alaskans like her or not is irrelevant, conservatives in most of the U.S., and especially in the bible-belt LOVE her. #2 – She’s, as she should be, P!ssed-off. Take a look at how SEACC managed the mining issue and how those of the same ILK have tried to tie up Sarah in court. Notice any similarities? Mark Begich and his smack talking buddies are in for a fight. Sarah will HAVE his job, their is no possible way for him to avoid it. Sarah, in Congress? Begich, SEACC, LCCS and likes are toast. I’m betting, like another poster here, Sarah’s not quit at all. She’s heading out to bloody some noses. I’ll donate $100 cash to her cause just to see where this train is heading. I’ve had my complete fill of obstructionists leaf-lickers too… Go Sarah!
July 7th, 2009 at 8:25 am
Who cares about Sarah. We’ve got new problems. As someone in the Anchorage Daily News blogged,
“Is this the same chief of staff Nizich:
–who did not stop the governor from using private email accounts for conducting official state business in order to circumvent public record laws?
—who approved Palin cashing in thousands of $$$ in per diem checks for living in her Wasilla home while not incurring any additonal expenses and giving herself a raise thereby violating AK laws?
—who did not protect Alaska’s interests by not invoking AK Constitution’s Article 3, Section 9 (Temporary Absence: In case of the temporary absence of the governor from office, the lieutenant governor shall serve as acting governor)
because he was too busy pallin’ around with the muckity-mucks at the Republican Convention?
And where was Sean Parnell when all this was happening?”
We need a clean slate not business as usual.
July 7th, 2009 at 9:32 am
Diva – Lots of irate hollering and no substance. You’re taking yourself way too seriously. We GOT a clean slate and that was Mor-Tax-Ski and his pack of thieves not taking the state to the cleaners. How soon you forget!
July 7th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
Was Sara Palin our Governor! REALLY!
July 7th, 2009 at 5:57 pm
Everyone taking swipes at Palin on her way out should just zip it. You got what you wanted, now shut up.
July 7th, 2009 at 7:15 pm
poor poor babies must not have gotten your gimmies so ya hate the palin wah wah wah ;
and yea maybe she does have a chance for potus heck the great one got in just cause hes a bro mead!!!
the ol story is if your a malotto the blacks will use ya for all your worth and the whites wont have ya.
so what is next the great molester in the sky what a pervert and look at all the coverage he gets disgusting.
now that aught to get your whiney selfs going now!!!
July 8th, 2009 at 8:47 am
When our country is shedding jobs and leaving people unemployed, she decides to quit her job! What a great example, isn’t this the second state job she has quit from? She must not need a job. Now why are we talking so much about someone that has ZERO in common with everyday people?
She lies…………….

“(S)he who winketh the eye causes trouble; And a prating fool shall fall.” Proverbs 10:10
July 8th, 2009 at 10:37 am
nome498: Supposedly you say, follow the link. I careless about Palin, what bothers me is the bashing on Palin, and how stupid she is. My goodness just look who’s in charge of the country. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpGH02DtIws
July 8th, 2009 at 12:04 pm
Milspec, what bothers me is your continuing bashing of Obama. It took GBW 8 years to screw up the nation. Obama has not even been in office for a year. Give him a chance before you start bashing him
July 8th, 2009 at 12:34 pm
Call her a quitter if you like…………..finally a person in public office who thinks of the people first…….who would vote for her? I would……… You can keep your Obamas, Al Frankens, and Mark Bagichs.
July 8th, 2009 at 12:40 pm
I agree with Milspec. 1000% Obama may have inherited this economy, but he’s done nothing but make it worse by plundering the pockets of those not even born yet. He is a stain, a blight on America, far worse than either Bush. Anything but an asset. Go back and follow the calendar and the tanking of America. The higher Barry went on the polls, the deeper the economy sank. NoBama, NoBiden, NoPelosi, NoClinton, NoKidding. Look at what the lefties have done to California… And that fungus has spread to the Whitehouse.
July 8th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
Even an idiot can see he is steering this country in the wrong direction. I don’t care if he has been in office 6 months or 4 years. What he is doing will destroy this country as we know it, and with the speed he is moving I will give him a year. Get off the Bush craze; he is no longer the man in charge. You can keep your Obama’s, Al Frankens, and Mark Bagichs, as Tired say’s.
July 8th, 2009 at 4:39 pm
Better them than a tired old man as yourself Mr Milspec
July 8th, 2009 at 5:46 pm
sad comeback mr bill burk cat got your ha ha democrat socialist agenda!!!!
July 8th, 2009 at 6:17 pm
I wonder if she’s practicing her drawl for her visit to TEXAS.
If not she needs to. Maybe rent some Matthew McConehey movies to mimic, and looking at Matt will give her the attention span. Country stations 24-7, Tim McGraw, CD’s in her sleep etc. She also needs to bring along her Agriculture Commissioner who qualification was she used to love cows as a kid, too. Then she can be a Dead Ringer for us Texans.
Oh yeah, mesquite trees, make a comment ’bout the beautiful mesquite trees and wonderful sweltering heat.
July 8th, 2009 at 6:21 pm
Oh yeah, and then for the Babtist fundamentalists, comment on all the locust swarms. Bingo! Perry is elected.
July 8th, 2009 at 6:34 pm
It certainly will be nice to watch Television without her Wasilla ‘Soap Story’ playing the news everywhere you turn. No wonder she didn’t get any work done. Her face was everywhere. Never met anyone that ‘bold’ and ’stupid’ at the same time.
July 8th, 2009 at 6:48 pm
The Juneau Empire is obsessed over Palin that is all they are talking about, they’re looking like a star struck team of employees and employers.
July 8th, 2009 at 6:50 pm
same here too, you all are looking more and more like star struck fans for talking about her through reading and commenting through this source of the palin frenzy. I bet you all keep up with the latest of Palin feeds through blogging, youtube videos, and even I bet you stop the channel when a flash of palin comes across the screen.
July 8th, 2009 at 6:53 pm
You all are just as obsessed over it, she makes you jealous.. only jealous people pay so much attention and spend so much time fuming over a person that causes them to feel so insecure.
July 8th, 2009 at 8:43 pm
and you’re not obsessed Flora, reading through all these posts and posting the 103rd, 104th and the 105th posts? You are funny, and I don’t mean funny ha-ha either.
July 8th, 2009 at 8:52 pm
Just one question????
Who will her VP?
Assemble The Voters!!!!!
July 9th, 2009 at 1:29 am
It amazed me, reading Sunday’s paper, to see the huge number of Palin supporters quoted as saying that the governor’s resignation was a political masterstroke? Is there a reason that they can’t understand that this permanently discredits Ms. Palin as a presidential candidate?
July 9th, 2009 at 8:55 am
Reasons to quit:
1. Declining approval ratings
2. Declining revenues
3. Pipeline won’t be finished until after 2011
4. Ethics complaints
5. Spoiled legislative relationships
6. Bottomless pit of need for National attention
7. Gotta make that $$.
Reasons to stay:
1. Proving she can run a state will give her at least some credibility in 2011.
2. Limiting National exposure will minimize chances of more embarrassing moments.
3. Those pesky kids could actually use a mother.
Leaving wins…..
July 9th, 2009 at 9:33 am
I hope this resignation has destroyed all hopes of her running for POTUS. I am afraid for our great country after reading that there are still some Republicans who idolize her. Although I am a Republican who voted for her, I for one am glad to see her go. She was no longer serving Alaska or the people of this great state. She was only in for herself.
July 9th, 2009 at 11:27 am
You’re afraid of Palin ?!? Good Grief girl, do you read anything about the national news or watch television? What kind of country do you think we will have left after all the Obamanites are through with it. If you want to be afraid just take a look at what is happening in the White House……………..for one and only one of a multitued of lies propogated by Obama, does this administration look honest and transparent?
July 9th, 2009 at 11:42 am
Tired, All of politics is made up of lies and who will not get caught. Republicans just look at it in a different way than Democrats, but both tell as many lies as they can get away with. IT just appears that the Democrats appear to tell lies that will help the majority of the people and the Republicans tell lies that will help the rich. Whom ever lies the best get the vote
July 9th, 2009 at 1:54 pm
Bill; I will agree with that last statement to a point. They all lie in one way or another, and they certainly can’t keep their pants on. However, I am not rich and I would guess you are in the same boat as me. I don’t know about you but I have not seen any increase in my income and I noticed that taxes are certainly not receding either. You talk about the rich, what do you think will happen if the rich are over taxed, the ones who own companies and create jobs? They will move over seas or start letting employees go. This Cap & Trade BO want’s to push down our throats will certainly destroy this economy even more then it is. The poor will just get poorer and middle class and rich will be at the same level. Are you better off sense BO has been in office, do you really think this administration is looking after you and your family? Just curious. I apologize to all for running off topic.
July 9th, 2009 at 1:55 pm
Burk – I can’t believe the complete ignorance in a statement like that. Does pillaging tax dollars that don’t even exist help the multitudes? Does free medical care for illegals how never have, nor ever will, pay into the system help the multitudes? Does socialism in any degree help the masses? Why don’t you explain to the group just how that works.
July 9th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
Bill…..define “rich”. It seems like the dems, who for some reason think that people who make a lot of money hoard it all to themselves, are slowly lowering the “rich” bar. Now being wealthy is defined as any family making $200,000 a year. Granted, that’s a good living, but I know people in Juneau that make that kind of money, and I certainly wouldn’t call the rich or wealthy. Hell, Al Gore thought that anybody that made $200,000 for 5 years was a millionaire.
July 10th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
Republicans are pro big business, and do not feel that the poor have a right to anything. Take for example the oil companies. the drug companies, and the insurance companies. They continue to make mega $$$, The are supported by the republicans, and no consideration is thought of for the people that that cannot afford to pay for their services
July 10th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
Who cares…just as long as we are finally rid of her. I personally am looking forward to seeing lights on in the governor’s mansion.
July 10th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
PS, the Republican party is mostly made up of Right Wing Conservative Christian< that have NO regard for human rights, and think they can control what people believe and feel
July 10th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
Sarah made rhis week’s TROUBLETOWN
July 11th, 2009 at 1:55 am
When $20, meant something, and worth working for back in the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s!!!!! Michael Jackson was already in his Millions!! Something, Obama will not how to work for!!! however. He will try to capitalize on the wealthy rich which our beloved Micheal Jackson already achieved . Capitalism, in which nobody will ever achieve in their life-time two or three times over.
July 11th, 2009 at 8:29 am
Burk- Try a few of these and let me know what you think
1. paychecks are for WORKERS
2. I am a conservative because we can’t ALL be on welfare.
3. Don’t spread my wealth, spread my work ethic
4. Trickle-down economics is better that Obamas trickle up poverty
5. CONSERVATIVES – We work hard so that you won’t have to.
6. Why should I pay for YOUR health care?
7. The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other peoples money.
….Let us know how that “Hopey-Changey thing works out for you.
July 11th, 2009 at 9:27 am
USSA There is nothing wrong with working. I have done so all my life until I retired. There is something wrong with people that look down upon other c because of race creed or sexual preference There is something wrong t with the picture when one has wealth, but thinks that people that are not as wealthy are beneath them. The Right Wing Conservative movement Feels that they know what God wants from us and that they are they are the only true Americans. One must also remember that Republicans used the be the Liberal party. Besides the Democrats now to now DO NOT have people in the media spitting out hate as the Republicans do such as Rush Linbaugh
July 11th, 2009 at 11:02 am
Hate mongering is a bipartisan affair, trust me. Lets talk though for a second about liberal hate mongers, like Michael Moore or Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews, and Anderson Cooper.. When their sort of venom comes from a conservative we’re called HATERS, and yet that same spew coming from a liberal is called “healthy debate”. Don’t think for a second that all conservatives enjoy the work of the likes of Limbaugh or that we’re all bible pounding fanatics or that we all turn our nose up and any ethnicity or sexual preference. Some of the biggest bigots I know are registered, card carrying Democrats. Their are those of us that are simply refusing to pay the way for those losers in the 18 to 40 age bracket who choose not to work, as a life style. They survive by being leaches on society and their are a ton of them right here in Juneau. Some need a hand up to get going, I’m first in line to help. Others are continuously asking for a handout to KEEP going. In those cases I’m also first in line to deliver the bad news. Also, don’t mix the terms Republican and Conservative thinking they’re one and the same, or interchangeable. I am a conservative, but I will never be a Republican.
July 11th, 2009 at 1:49 pm
Tired–What is happening in the White House??? Please list one of the multitued (I’m sure you meant “multitude”) of lies propogated by Obama. Oh, and I do read two newspapers each day, watch the national news, and read two news magazines each week. I guess where I have gone wrong is, I don’t watch Fox News. Do you have any idea where our country was when Obama came to the White House?? In the event you don’t, the economy was already in the toilet and gasoline was $4 a gallon. To answer your question–The Obama administration is a lot more honest and transparent than the previous lying bunch but I know that we don’t want to talk about them. They were there for only 8 years and Obama has been there 6 whole months.
July 11th, 2009 at 3:28 pm
She is as transparent as she said was going to be….; look, you can see right through her!
July 11th, 2009 at 7:07 pm
UASS, that sounded like a bumper sticker recitation.
July 12th, 2009 at 12:42 am
She will beYour Next President !!!!
Tom, from the haidas!!!!
July 12th, 2009 at 8:01 am
There’s always a method in Sarah Palin’s madness. Watch out.
Claudine Willis
July 12th, 2009 at 8:34 am
A silly movement our first lady Governor made: “Quit before her term was over”. Little time to go before her term would end. Once, again a very silly decision she made.
July 12th, 2009 at 8:54 pm
The problem with Palin is that the vast majority of America is sick of her. She’s overexposed. And a national joke.
Palin’s gonna lay low. She made big bank with her book deal so she doesn’t need $$. She has less than zero chance of defeating Obama in 2012. If she disappears for a few years she can come back as an ‘elder statesman (woman)’ and America being America, we’ll have forgotten all of the ignorance and stupidity she displayed last year. She’ll also have shed the ‘quitter’ label. She can spend the next four years studying geography and saying ‘nu-cu-lar’ in front of the mirror, and memorizing lists of newspapers that she now reads.
July 12th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
Some of us like to have intelligent, articulate exchanges on these blogs. If you can’t do better than the 7th grade humor, perhaps you should play elsewhere and leave the political exchanges to the folks that can STAY ON TOPIC. At this point you’ve become a bore.
July 13th, 2009 at 4:53 am
Its obvious she has put Alaska ahead of any future political ambition. That is called Selflessness.
July 13th, 2009 at 3:48 pm
No. Not my president. I always wonder about all of you who hide behind your email tags….; I am willing to take credit and repsonsibility for what I say….
July 13th, 2009 at 6:02 pm
Then say something that makes sense, Thomas.
July 14th, 2009 at 7:53 am
Right on ToddP.
July 14th, 2009 at 8:03 am
yes.. shows she cant stand the heat when she is CAUGHT doing something wrong and BAILS out.. guess she shouldnt be doing things wrong to be SUED and she wont be worrying about ethics commities.
she sucked as a major and sucked worse as a governor. maybe she can get hired at saturday night live.. its fake like her too…
July 14th, 2009 at 8:03 am
oops.. MAYOR.. not major
July 14th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
Much to the chagrins of the unenlightened here, she has a extraordinarily bright future in national politics. Sit back and watch folks. Sarah now has a team of professional handlers, for which she is a spokes-person. Choke on it. StillBob, Bill Burk and the likes, how do you like your crow cooked. My treat.
July 14th, 2009 at 2:33 pm
When did democrats become so mean and viscious? You guys used to be the loving, caring, kind party that was the voice of the caring people.
Some of the comments on here are brutal, childish and uncalled for. If a republican said some of these things about a popular democrat leader, you people would be on here freaking out about the evil arrogant republicans!!! But because you all don’t like Palin, it’s apparently OK to say as many insultive things as possible as you want.
The disgusting thing is that most of this hatred isn’t really born because of the job Palin has done. It’s because she’s a republican who failed. And maybe some jealousy because this unknown woman almost became VP before your hero Hilary did!!!!
Am I a Palin fan? I think she had her strengths and weaknesses. And that the run for VP pretty much doomed her. She clearly wasn’t ready to jump up on that big of a stage yet. But the way you people are attacking her is ridiculous. Frankly, I expect better from you. Your inability to seperate your political believes from reality is scary.
July 14th, 2009 at 3:32 pm
Johnny Wishbone, It is not because she is a Republican, it is because she is inept uneducated person that has NO business being in a political office. For a person the says she has a degree in journalism she, why is it that she can not even put a sentence together when speaking
July 14th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
Bill.
Speaking of not being able to put a sentence together. Maybe you should go back and read the sentences that you wrote. If you are going to take the time to write about a person being uneducated, you might want to take the time to proof read what you write.
July 14th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
Dan I don’t claim to have a degree in Journalism. Palin does, and if that is true then she should be able to speak correctly. If an not mistaken it is in broadcast journalism, and that would include being able to speak in public
July 14th, 2009 at 8:58 pm
And now back to our original programming/question…Indeed Palin’s resignation will harm her ambitions, but the new ethics complaint filed today will kill her ambitions. Apparently our fearsome gov was getting paid by the state of Alaska the whole time she was stumping for VP. And, she committed a major breach of protocol by not being willing to hand over her gubernatorial responsibilities to Parnell while she was out of state during the campaign. I hope there’s a lawsuit and she is finally held entirely responsible for her abuse of the office she was elected to. Contrary to the image she is trying to portray, she is not the victim. We are.
July 14th, 2009 at 9:34 pm
We owe John McCain a debt of gratitude.
July 15th, 2009 at 5:38 am
Yeah,Todd P., we owe John McCain a debt of Gratitude. If it eren’t for his lawyers all the admin officials found in contempt might have just testified. Instead they have been found in contempt, which is much better for Alaska’s standings as ‘most corrupt’ state .
July 15th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
Bill Says “why is it that she can not even put a sentence together when speaking.” Bill, when was the last time you heard Barry “O” speak without his teleprompter? You talk about someone who can’t put 2 words together without that ah, ah, ah coming up a hundred times in a 20 word sentence.
August 19th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
Yes

I’ve been active in taxes for longer then I care to acknowledge, both on the individualized side (all my working life history!!) and from a legal stand since satisfying the bar and following up on tax law. I’ve provided a lot of advice and corrected a lot of wrongs, and I must say that what you’ve posted makes utter sense. Please continue the good work – the more individuals know the better they’ll be outfitted to handle with the tax man, and that’s what it’s all about.
